Birkenhead Timber revived

BIRKENHEAD: Birkenhead Timber Supplies in New Chester Road, destroyed in a fire in 2007, has reopened and is trading again.

The fire occurred when a blaze at an adjacent company spread to its property. It was so severe it took ten fire crews and two days to bring under control.

Barrie Pilgrim, managing director of Birkenhead Timber Supplies, said: "We are a family business and it really hurt when the fire destroyed the business. We had a really long, drawn-out battle with the planners, who wanted us to rebuild it in its original glory."

"When we overcame that, we moved forward as quickly as possible. It's fantastic to get it up and running again. We just have to rebuild it to what it was. It's a big, big burden off my shoulders."

Its 16-strong workforce had been retained at the builders' merchants next door, which Mr Pilgrim also owns, while the timber yard was rebuilt. But now the staff are focused once more on the timber yard.

He said: "We are elated - but we know we will have to work very hard for the next 12 to 15 months to get it back up there."
