Don't cut construction, warns building group

Published:  10 March, 2010

UK: A major campaign by the UK Construction Group is under way, aimed at all three political parties.

Any cuts to state spending, it said, should not fall on public building projects. This would have too great an impact on jobs and the wider economy.

UK Construction Group represents the country's largest builders. It fears that the industry is facing major cost-cutting after the General Election.

Reasearch hows that for every £1m spent on construction, 28 jobs are created. This figure is 40% higher than that for manufacturing.

According to Paul Drechsler, chairman and chief executive of building firm Wates: "The role construction plays in society is not well understood."
