Rod Allen: the only way for the market is up.

Rollercoaster timber market to calm down

Published:  26 November, 2010

LONDON: Rod Allen, managing director of Finnforest UK, said 2010 had been a good and eventful year for the company, but predicted that 2011 would be a calmer time following a rollercoaster ride for the sector.

Addressing an audience of trade press in the run-up to Christmas, Mr Allen said that the timber market had "experienced a rollercoaster ride over the last six years. Now, following the recession, the sector has reached the bottom, so the only way is up. The climb back may be slow and steady, and for Finnforest, thanks to our broad portfolio, we are in a good position."

In 2010, Mr Allen said, prices had been good and supplies tight. He believes that in the run-up to 2012, the difference between making and losing money will become much less.

"The mark of a good business is that it is able to deal with short-term problems quickly," he added.
