Construction firms shed jobs

Published:  08 December, 2010

LONDON: Construction firms expect to continue to shed jobs according to the quarterly survey by recruitment firm Manpower.

The rate of job loss for the sector is slower than the previous period with a reading of -4% compared to -6% in Q4.

Overall for the UK, the survey showed a seasonally adjusted net balance of +2% of firms plan to take on more staff in the first three months of 2011, following a +1% reading for the whole of 2010.

The survey also warned that the gap in hiring between the different regions was more severe than during the recession, with Northern Ireland and Scotland showing weakness while the South West appeared stronger.

The survey is based on more than 2100 employers across the country.
