SUNDERLAND: One of the North East's leading independent builders' merchants is today celebrating after being honoured by her home city.

Anne Ganley, chief executive of Thompson Building Centres, was given the 'Outstanding Contribution to the City' award by Sunderland City Council at a major ceremony on Wearside last week.

Mrs Ganley's special award was part of the Sunderland Echo PORTFOLIO Business Award which honours companies and individuals across Wearside and was one of 14 honours given out on the night.

The Outstanding Contribution to The City is selected by the council to recognise someone who has made a real impact in their home area.

"This was an absolute surprise for me but a really great honour," said Mrs Ganley. "To be recognised in this way by the city which is at the heart of Thompson Building Centres and where we started the business is very special not just to me but to every member of our team."

The judges said Mrs Ganley was "a worthy winner who has turned her business from humble beginnings into a market leader while devoting time and energy to any number of good causes".

Their citation went on, "under the winner's leadership their company has grown to become not only a recognised brand in the North East but beyond and is well positioned for strong future growth.

"The council has praised the winner for their enterprising, bold approach, clear vision and dedication which lie behind the success of this multi-million pound business which now has more than 200 employees across the region."

This is not the first time Mrs Ganley has been honoured at the PORTFOLIO awards as she previously was named Entrepreneur of the Year and last year Thompson Building Centres became Overall Company of the Year.

Mrs Ganley received her award from Sunderland City Council chief executive Dave Smith in front of an audience of more than 350 business men and women at the Stadium of Light.
