Amazon moves into industrial supplies

Published:  30 April, 2012

SLOUGH: Amazon, the online sales giant is moving into industrial supplies in the US and could target the UK building materials market.

Amazon is launching AmazonSupply offering 500,000 products, including building materials, to business users.

Prentis Wilson, vice president of AmazonSupply, says the reason for this move is because "we've received great feedback about the industrial and scientific selection currently available on Amazon.com and we're excited to offer a dedicated store to meet our business and industrial customers' needs".

Retail analysts think business-to-business is the next big thing for Amazon. If AmazonSupply did move into the UK, then builders' merchants are one of the main businesses that would be in Amazon's sights right from the start. The market in building materials is estimated to be worth some £40bn with on-line sales through websites such as Screwfix.com and plumbworld.co.uk, taking a small, but growing share.
