The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has appointed Dennis Smith as interim membership services director on a consultancy basis.

Mr Smith will assist the BMF for a three month period, while the trade body seeks a permanent replacement for its long-standing federation secretary, Peter Matthews who is retiring.

With over 40 years' experience in the builders' merchant sector, most recently as managing director of Bradfords Building Supplies, Mr Smith also has a long association with the BMF. He served as a non-executive director from 2005 until 2011 and was chairman of the south west region between 2013 and 2014.

Mr Smith will work alongside Mr Matthews in June and will then take on full responsibility for member services during July and August. He will work with BMF managing director John Newcomb to recruit a permanent membership services director, and will also be part of the company’s team at the BMF All-Industry Conference in Malta.

Commenting on the appointment, Mr Newcomb said: “Replacing someone of Peter’s calibre and experience is not an easy task. We have, therefore, been fortunate to sign up Dennis Smith to help us through the transition. The breadth and depth of his knowledge and understanding of the merchanting industry will be a great asset over the next three months, and I am looking forward to working with him.

“I would also like to thank Peter for his many years of excellent service to the BMF and to wish him well in the next stage of his life. Though, even in retirement, Peter will continue his association with the BMF, acting as secretary to the board until the end of the year.”
