Jewson employees from Yorkshire have started a mammoth challenge for charity, with the goal of running more than 520 miles in just five days for Cancer Research UK.
The 30-strong team have joined forces from across a number of Jewson branches and offices to tackle the 20-marathon challenge, in the hope of raising more than £10,000 for the charity. The group comprises a range of running abilities and ages.
The team’s journey started at the Jewson branch in York on Monday 6 June, with the runners set to complete between three and five marathons per day until Friday10 June. The route will see the runners pass 20 Jewson branches, including Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.
Participants were rallied together by Barry Hilling, area director for all of the Jewson branches involved. He said: “Completing one marathon is a hard enough task, but we wanted to go that step further – quite literally – to raise money for charity.
“Cancer Research UK carries out vital research and supports patients and families affected by cancer, so we are more than happy to put on our running shoes and put up with a few blisters to help support its work.”
Rachel Speight-McGregor, Cancer Research UK’s local fundraising manager for York, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Jewson have decided to attempt such a great challenge to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK.
“The Monster Marathon is a great way of getting their different branches involved and shows that there are so many ways we can all get involved to help beat cancer. We can’t thank them enough for their support and want to wish them all the very best with the challenge.
“Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer. However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters without whom we would not be able to fund our research.”
