Building material prices have continued to rise this year, with imported plywood reporting the biggest price hike.

This is according to the latest Monthly Statistics of Building Materials and Components report by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, which showed prices rose in all sectors: New Housing +4.7%, Other New Work +5.1%, Repair and Maintenance + 6%, and All Work +5.1%.

The materials with the biggest price rises in the last 12 months were imported plywood (+15.4), imported sawn or planed wood (+11.4) and kitchen furniture (+10.4%).

The materials with the biggest price drops were other builders ironmongery (-0.5%) and ceramic tiles (0.1%).

The report also showed:

• Sales of sand and gravel have increased by 6.1% between Q3 2017 and Q3 2018.

• Sales of ready-mixed concrete in Quarter 2 2018 decreased by 1% compared Quarter 2 2017

• Brick deliveries increased by 0.2% in October 2018 versus October 2017

• Concrete block deliveries increased by 5.4% In October 2018 versus October 2017

• Imports of construction materials increased by £56 million in the third quarter of 2018 (to £4,512 billion) compared to the previous quarter, an increase of 1.26%

• Exports of construction materials increased in the third quarter of 2018 by £52 million (to £1,963 billion), a 2.7% increase.
