CAMBRIDGE: How the building materials’ supply chain is evolving through the recession – and responding to the carbon challenge – was the focus of a constituency visit to Ridgeons by Simon Wright MP in June.
The MP visited the Norwich South branch of Ridgeons, East Anglia’s leading timber and builders’ merchant to learn how the company helps his constituents choose a greener way of life.
During the visit, hosted by managing director, Angela Rushforth, Mr Wright toured the branch with Northern region commercial director, John Mortlock. Mr Wright was shown Ridgeons’ operations and heard of the important role that each of the merchant’s 22 branches plays in ensuring that the construction needs of the region are continuously met.
As merchants offer the most efficient route-to-market, their role in the local construction economy is vital in providing everyday trade essentials and value-added home improvement products.
Ridgeons views the return of a thriving repair, maintenance and improvement market as a way to revitalise the region’s economy. It beleves there is demand in most areas, which has been somewhat restricted due to economic uncertainty.
The reluctance of banks to lend, the absence of first-time buyers, and housebuilders who mothballed new developments means merchants are increasingly enduring tougher trading conditions.
