CHICHESTER: Top chef Nik Westacott will be kicking off National BBQ Week in style by offering top tips and recipes at this year’s Covers Home Ideas Summer Fayre.

Mr Westacott, a renowned forager and expert in rustling up outside meals, will be among the guests of honour at the popular Quarry Lane family fun day, now in its fourth year.

He said: “Despite the wet weather over the spring, National BBQ Week for me represents the start of summer – and the joys of cooking outdoors.

“I’m a huge fan of BBQ cooking and can’t wait to show people some interesting alternatives to the usual barbie staples like sausages and burgers. It should be a really fun day and a chance for people to really get involved.”

As well as giving tips and answering BBQ-related questions, Mr Westacott will be putting on a demonstration of his culinary skills.

Other attractions lined up for the event, which starts at 10am on Saturday 26 May, include an appearance by children’s TV character Handy Manny and a chance to try out a range of cunning tricks with Robbie the Magician. A free bouncy castle is being laid on for the younger visitors, as well as farm animals, a treasure hunt and a tombola.

Weather permitting, visitors to the Summer Fayre will also have the chance to get a bird’s eye view of Chichester by taking a free trip in a hot air balloon.

Henry Green, Covers Home Ideas commercial director, said: “Last year’s event was our most popular ever and we’re really looking forward to staging another great family day out.

“This year we are also offering 20 per cent off everything for the whole day, so there will be plenty of opportunity for people to grab a bargain or two while they’re being entertained.”

The Summer Fayre will take place at the Covers Home Ideas branch on Quarry Lane from 10am – 2pm.
