MKM Building Supplies has appointed a new commercial director to drive forward its national branch network.

Toby Stuart-Jervis, 53, brings more than 35 years of industry experience to the Stoneferry company, including a previous commercial director position with Bristol-based Burdens.

In his new role, Mr Stuart-Jervis will work with MKM’s branch managers to help them become more profitable. He will also oversee the expansion of the business as it looks to add another three locations to its 39-strong branch network over the next 12 months.

He said: “I started on the trade counter and have done everything in the industry from driving delivery vans up to management and directorship roles. I have a very thorough knowledge of the industry, having worked with suppliers and major contractors at a senior level.

“I was attracted to MKM because it is an independent, which makes it more entrepreneurial. It means there is more scope to try new ideas rather than stick to old principles which are rapidly becoming outdated.”

Mr Stuart-Jervis has known MKM Building Supplies’ founder and executive chairman David Kilburn for many years and both are members of the Worshipful Company of Builders Merchants.

He said they shared the same values and outlook on business and that was another incentive for him to come to Hull: “David is very well respected in the industry because of what he has achieved and I’m very much looking forward to working with him.”

In turn, Mr Kilburn – who established MKM Building Supplies 17 years ago – said: “I’m very pleased Toby has come to work with us. We are always eyeing growth and he will be instrumental in helping us achieve greater market share over the coming months.”
