Published:  10 May, 2009

Cutting back: Wolseley jobs go.

LEAMINGTON SPA: Building materials group Wolseley is to close its distribution centres in Didcot and Chorley, with an expected the loss of 269 jobs.

The changes will affect 133 jobs at Chorley and 76 jobs at Didcot and further 60 jobs at the company's transport sites, supporting the two distribution centres.

Said Rob Marchbank, chief executive officer Europe and managing director of Wolseley UK: "The prolonged nature and severity of the global economic recession and unprecedented market conditions are driving the need for greater productivity and to operate even more efficiently."

Wolseley owns Plumb Center and Build Center in the UK. Since August 2007, it has cut over 17 000 jobs and closed 713 branches worldwide.
