Last year, ITW Industry’s operations manager Scott McKenzie took part in “Cycle the World”, organised by the Enable Scotland charity.
Mr McKenzie raced as part of the four-man ‘Power Images Cycling Team’ at the Knockhill Racing Circuit. Adverse weather stopped the team marginally short of their 200-mile goal, but they still clocked an impressive 196 miles and raised £2,252.
On Thursday 30 January, Mr McKenzie and his team received an award presented by Gavin Hastings OBE, former Scotland and British & Irish Lions rugby captain. The award was in recognition of distance covered, money raised and for team spirit showed.
Of the cycle, Mr McKenzie said: “The night was a mix of pride and a humbling experience in what Enable achieve in helping people with learning difficulties. So I would like to say a big thank you to all who donated or sponsored us.”
Power Images sponsored the team shirts, which carried the number 80 in memory of Matt Polanski who was tragically killed in a motorbike race at Knockhill last year. Mr McKenzie’s team-mates included Iain Struthers, managing director of Power Images; Duncan Vincent, former bike racer, race-car driving instructor and Sky motorsport commentator; and Jimmy Storrar, a mechanic and motorbike racer.
The team plans to participate in this year’s Cycle the World in late August, this time cycling for 24 hours around the Knockhill Racing Circuit. The team will also compete in the Etape Caledonia race in May, which raises funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Mr McKenzie said: “Last year one of my fellow motor racing competitors, Alex Bruce, passed away after a five-year battle with cancer. I also have raced beside his son, daughter and grandson. The biggest charity to benefit from the Etape is Marie Curie Cancer care so it seems right to ride for this cause. These are two fantastic charities that you hope you will never need but their support is amazing for those that do.”
