Baxi - sponsors of this year's Gas Safety Week - is keen to remind people that gas safety is important throughout the year, and not just in Gas Safety Week.

In a pledge to continue to raise safety standards for all, Baxi has designed a number of initatives to support gas safety.

Baxi is a sponsor of 2014's Gas safety Week, taking place on 15 to 21 September to raise awareness of the importance of taking care of gas appliances to ensure a safe home.

Part of the company's gas safe initiatives include educating its employees about carbon monoxide (CO), and providing advice on how to stay safe.

Paul Hardy, managing director at Baxi, said: “As a business, we are committed to safety – and this includes the safety of our employees as well as our customers and the general public. If we can protect just one person from the effects of carbon monoxide, our efforts will have been worthwhile.

“Every year, far too many people suffer from preventable gas related accidents, such as gas leaks, explosions, fires and CO poisoning. In the last year alone, over 4,000 people in England and Wales were admitted to hospital with CO poisoning – and 40 fatalities were recorded. In this day and age, such figures are disturbing and we must come together as an industry to take action now.

“Gas Safety Week is the ideal time to put gas safety at the front of people’s minds by asking them to have their gas appliances checked and make sure they have a CO detector. However, it’s important for people to remember that gas safety isn’t a one week novelty but something to bear in mind all year round. Only then can they really protect themselves and families from harm.”

In the UK, 84% of homes have smoke detectors but only around 15% have CO alarms. To sign the 'Say no to CO' petition, visit http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/64486
