Dakea, a brand of Altaterra, which is part of the Velux Group, has released of its sustainability manifesto, WeCare.
The manufacturer of roof windows has pledged to tackle the impact of its building products on nature and the environment. The manifesto also includes plans to remove the 232 tonnes of CO2e, produced annually by the manufacture of the company's products.
Over the next eight years, Dakea will also be switching to 100% renewable energy for all office premises, striving for zero emission company vehicles, and reducing its business-related air travel by 30%.
Commenting on the company’s new sustainability strategy, Altaterra CEO Krzysztof Dudek said: “Our WeCare sustainability strategy includes a number of initiatives to reduce emissions by 2030, but also measures to promote responsible business and lifestyles among our employees, suppliers, and customers. The commitments we have made are the results of hard work by our employees and experts at Science-Based Targets Initiative.”
To develop an evidence-based approach, Altaterra has teamed up with international environmental experts at the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), which is part of the World Resource Institute’s Centre for Sustainable Business, and is a collaboration betwen the WRI, World Wide Fund for Nature, and UN Global Compact.
Businesses joining the SBTi are required by its ‘Net-Zero Standard’ to continuously monitor their activities, undergo independent carbon accounting, and report the results publicly in accordance with the standards set out by the Carbon Disclosure Project.
The scheme is recognised as the ‘gold standard’ of environmental reporting because it uses scientific methods to track the sustainability success of companies to ensure they remain firmly on course to slash their carbon emissions.
Since publishing the standard, the SBTi has also released guidelines for specific industries, including the construction sector, which, according to experts, is one of the most important areas for combatting climate change.
Dudek added: “Achieving these goals will require us to make many changes in the way the company operates. We recognise them as our necessary contribution to achieving the climate goals set out in the Paris Agreement.”
