KEIGHLEY: Builders' merchants Uriah Woodhead is supporting plans to developed Keighley's first community-run hydroelectric power plant.
The merchant owns the land next to the weir where Transition Keighley, the group behind the project, would like to locate the facility.
John Walker, who owns Uriah Woodhead, is to become a patron of the Transition Keighley group.
Mr Walker said: "This is an exciting project in the way it will help to tackle climate change and make a contribution to the community."
Bob Thorp, project group spokesman said the plant had the potential to supply 84 000 units of electricity each year, equivalent to the electricity consumption of 20 average households.
Water Power Enterprises, which is a separate social enterprise company running a similar project in Settle, predicts the Keighley plant would annually replace 36 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
