MIDDLESBROUGH: Builders’ merchants and property investment business Atkinson Northern has boosted profits and turnover, but says investment in new branch openings have hit profit levels.
The firm, which is known as JT Atkinson, has 13 branches in the north east and Cumbria and employs a total of 190 staff. The family-owned business has opened five stores in Bedale, Bishop Auckland, Hartlepool, Gateshead and Sunderland.
The company's results for 2011, show turnover rose to £28m from £25.6m the previous year, and profits jumped to £719,524 for the year, up from £527 931 in 2010. But the directors said: “Profits fell in the principal activities of builders’ merchanting and property investment as a result of the opening of five new branches in 2010/11, and because of significant dilapidations expenditure. It is anticipated that profits will recover in 2012.”
The company, which plans a further branch opening in Aspatria in Cumbria this year, also trades from sites in Cockermouth, Penrith, Appleby, Kirkby Stephen, Hawes, Northallerton, Middlesbrough and Hathaway and Hoyle timber merchant in Stockton.
