LUTTERWORTH: Bob Keal, director of AJ Bryan Builders and Plumbing Contractors in Highcross Street, Harborough, warns business to be aware of a new telephone scam to hack into business computers.
BT confirms it has received numerous calls from customers elsewhere reporting a similar scam. The con involves a call from a technical assistant purporting to be from BT calling to resolve a computer fault, reports the Lutterworth Mail.
Mr Keal said the caller started asking probing questions to get access to passwords and other computer data. When Mr Keal, sensing a scam, asked questions of his own, the caller hung up. The call was international and the con artist said he was phoning from a BT call centre in India.
"I thought it was very cunning and that small businesses could be taken in by it quite easily," he said. Mr Keal, who also reported the incident to Leicestershire police, fears people could be taken in by the scam because of the popularity of BT internet services.
