MKM Building Supplies has strengthened its senior management team in Glasgow with the appointment of Lee Smith.

Mr Smith joins the company as branch director, taking full responsibility for the Nuneaton Street depot.

Craig Millar – branch director since Glasgow opened two years ago – has taken a dual role that sees him retain his interest in developing the branch but is also focused on growing MKM Building Supplies’ network across Scotland.

Mr Smith brings more than 25 years’ experience in the builders’ merchant industry to his new role, having worked for both independents and nationals during his career.

He said: “I have spent my whole career in the builders’ merchant industry, from working on the counter to the sales office, sales manager and sales director, so branch director was always going to be my next move.

“Before MKM set up in Glasgow the city was in need of an independent, but MKM is an independent with a difference. It is a premium independent, in many ways the fifth national but with a strong customer-centric focus. I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with them, particularly in my adopted city where I have spent so much of my working life.”

Mr Smith added that MKM had made great inroads to the local builders’ merchant market since being established two years ago and is now ready to go to the next level.

As well as taking on the day-to-day management of the branch, Mr Smith will also implement a strategy to drive sales in Glasgow.

He said: “There are 14,000 construction companies in the Glasgow area and we need to show them the many benefits of working with MKM.

“There is a great team already in place in the branch and a real buzz when you walk in. That is our advantage; great people and great customer service.”
