A team of 22 UK travellers, including John Connett, key account manager – north, Faithful Quality Tools, will be descending on the Algarve in Portugal to compete in the Praia De Luz Triathlon, to raise money for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

On 23 April, Mr Connett, along with several friends, will be taking part in the Praia De Luz Triathlon, which involves a ½ mile swim in the Atlantic sea, a 12-mile bike ride, followed by a three-mile run.

Mr Connett’s wife Donna will also be competing in the team event, along with their eldest son Hayden, 9, who will be taking part in an Aquathon, which involves swimming and running.

Commenting on the triathlon, Mr Connett, said: “The training through the cold winter mornings and nights has been tough, and even though I will definitely be feeling the pain in two weeks’ time, this is nothing compared to what my son Lewis has endured over the past two years.

“We are doing the triathlon to raise vital funds for the Alder Hey Children’s charity, as the hospital is very close to our hearts. It has provided Lewis, who was born with a rare genetic disorder called Apert Syndrome, with over two years worth of help and support through major surgery procedures.”

Alder Hey Children’s hospital is the UK’s biggest children’s hospital and the work and support they provide to families is remarkable, concluded Mr Connett. He said: “The NHS is something we all take for granted, but until you require the services on a regular basis you truly don’t understand what is on everyone’s doorstep. Lewis has endured several surgeries over the past two years, ranging from a couple of hours to 13 hours in theatre, and has more planned for later this year. The standard care, operations and appointments are funded by the NHS nationally, but the after care and support for healthy recovery is just as important as the surgical procedures themselves. The fundraising we are doing is directed towards helping children and their families have the best recuperation and stay in hospital by helping to raise money to purchase play equipment, iPads and educational toys.”
