CARLISLE: The son of legendary Carlisle United commentator Derek Lacey led a charity challenge in his father's memory on Saurday.

To mark the anniversary of Lacey's death, his son Steve led a 140-mile coast-to-coast cycle ride to raise money for a number of worthy causes.

He rode alongside a trio from DIY store Wickes: Steve's brother-in-law Neil Patterson, manager of the firm's Carlisle outlet, and Graham Packer and Simon Ford, bosses of the Stockton and South Shields stores.

The Wickes cyclists raised money for blood cancer cause Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research - the store's nominated charity and for which they have collected more than £1m nationally.

Neil said before the challenge: "We've been training pretty hard and riding about 30 miles a day, three times a week. We're feeling pretty confident we shouldn't have too many problems. The Carlisle Wickes store alone raised over £1,000 last year to help the charity."
