Selco Builders Warehouse has teamed up with the London Broncos Rugby League team, which they sponsor, to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Broncos home match with Wigan Warriors was nominated as the season’s official charity match, with money raised through a donation from tickets as well as bucket collections and text donations.

Selco and its employees are striving to raise £100,000 by the end of 2013 to help the charity improve the lives of people affected by cancer. The company’s head of marketing, Helen Cooper, says the tie-in with the Broncos helped to raise awareness as well as important funds for Macmillan.

“We’re delighted with the amount raised and would like to thank the fans of London Broncos and Wigan Warriors for getting involved and supporting this very worthwhile charity,” Ms Cooper said.

“Not only were we able to raise more than £3,511 towards our target, but we also made sure that the fans in attendance were aware of the valuable work Macmillan does up and down the country that simply wouldn’t be possible without fundraising efforts such as this.

“Money was raised through ticket sales, with £1 from every ticket sold going to the charity, so a huge thank you to London Broncos for supporting our chosen charity.”

Broncos staff and players also made donations.

Pupils from Marlborough Science Academy in St Albans, Hertfordshire, attended the game, forming a guard of honour as the two teams ran out onto the pitch. They also took part in Selco’s popular half-time Cement Mixer Challenge, a regular fixture at Broncos home matches this season with London Broncos’ mascots Buck and Dusty.

Nicola Skipwith, Macmillan Cancer Support area fundraising manager, concluded: “One in three of us will get cancer and it’s the toughest thing most of us will ever face. If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, or a loved one has, you’ll want a team of people in your corner supporting you every step of the way and that’s what we are here for.

“With more people living with cancer than ever before, the need for our work is constantly growing and it’s thanks to fundraising efforts such as this that enable us to continue. We’d like to thank everyone for giving so generously on the day.”
