MKM Building Supplies has announced ambitious expansion plans ahead of the opening of its 40th branch.

The company, which is headquartered in Hull, is looking to extend its branch network to all corners of the UK, including plans for six new branches to be operational by the end of next year.

The announcement comes as MKM prepares to establish its 40th branch in Nuneaton Street, Glasgow.

It is due to open later in the summer and brings the number of MKM depots in Scotland to five.

Founder and chief executive David Kilburn said 40 branches represented a milestone in the company’s 18-year history, but it was important that the business continued growing.

As MKM currently enjoys a stronghold in Yorkshire and the North and East of England, future branches will be concentrated in the south and the west.

Mr Kilburn said: “It is incredibly exciting to be on the cusp of opening our 40th branch, particularly in such a great city as Glasgow. It will help to consolidate our Scottish presence which is a natural area of growth.

“However, it is important not to be complacent. MKM is a company borne out of innovation and hard work and there are many areas of the UK we don’t operate in. So our plan is to ensure we are operating in many more of those in the future.”

Mr Kilburn added key to the expansion plan was finding the right people to manage the branches.

MKM employs a business model whereby all branch managers are stakeholders in the business who benefit directly from its performance.

“A large part of our success has been incentivising our branch managers through making them stakeholders,” Mr Kilburn said.

“It provides a platform for talented people in the industry, such as those who have been successful branch managers to take the next step in their careers.

“These are the type of people we look for, those who are hungry for the extra responsibility so they can achieve the extra rewards.”
