Selco Builders Warehouse has congratulated the Birmingham Brummies speedway team on their historic season.

The Brummies topped the Elite League at the end of the regular season for the first time in their history, before going on to defeat Wolverhampton both home and away in the play-off semi-finals. The team lost to Poole in the final, but Selco managing director Chris Cunliffe spoke highly of the team’s performance.

“It has been a magnificent effort from the Brummies and everyone at Selco is delighted and honoured to have been with the team and officials every step of the way throughout the season,” he enthused. “To top the table is a fantastic achievement and while it’s a shame the final didn’t go the way of the Brummies, it takes nothing away from the performance during the whole of 2013.

“We enjoy an excellent relationship with the Birmingham Brummies and would like to pass on our congratulations to all the riders and officials.”

The final meeting of the season came on Tueaday, with the second leg of the Elite League play-off final against Poole at Perry Barr. The meeting had to be postponed by 24 hours due to the weather, but Monday still proved a landmark day for the Selco Birmingham Brummies as officials and riders Martin Smolinski, Chris Harris and Ben Barker attended a special civic reception hosted by the Birmingham Lord Mayor, Councillor Mike Leddy.

Scores of fans were also at the event, while Selco marketing manager Simon Humpage and Perry Barr branch manager Paul Smith represented the title sponsors.

“It was an excellent gesture to host a civic reception for Birmingham Brummies and we were delighted to have a Selco representation at the event,” said Mr Harris.

Alan Phillips, managing director of Birmingham Brummies, added: “We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks for all the support we have received from Selco Builders Warehouse.

“It is good for the prestige of speedway to have such a major national brand involved in the sport.”
