EAST YORKSHIRE: Ten staff at MKM builders' merchants on Bessingby Industrial Estate cycled 1008 miles on an exercise bike – the distance between the company's most northerly outlet in Scotland, to their most southerly site in Chelmsford, Essex.

The 'route' included cycling the distances between each of MKM's branches and so far the workers have broken their £1-a-mile target by raising almost £2000 for the British Heart Foundation.

MKM Bessingby's assistant manager Kris Marsh, who set the challenge and took part in the sponsored cycle, said: "As a company, we are going on a fitness regime to lose weight and we want to get fit and active and raise money at the same time."

The MKM workers took it in turns to cycle for an hour each day on an exercise bike set up in the company's showroom until the 1008-mile target had been met.

MKM staff continued their energetic fund-raising over the weekend with a charity five-a-side football tournament on Sunday at Bridlington Sports Centre in Gypsey Road.
