MANCHESTER: The Waste and Resources Action Programme estimates that about £1.5bn worth of building materials move from builders' merchant to building sites then straight to landfill.

At least 14% of construction waste is unused material, not damaged, just leftovers, said Mike Close from BuilderScrap, the web platform that allows builders to pass on and find materials.

The business will promote its waste recovery service at Greenbuild Expo on 26 and 27 May as part of the North West Construction Knowledge Hub covering all aspects of sustainability, to help the construction industry build and maintain in a more sustainable manner.

Cement company Lafarge UK is to introduce a cement collection and recycling service to help builders merchants cut waste going to landfill.

The company's merchant customers can arrange collection of out-of-date packed cement via the usual ordering system.

This extends Lafarge's similar pallet recycling service introduced last year.
