NEWPORT: Ruben Dobbs and Haydn Probert, who work at the Newport branch of Keyline Builders Merchants, have won the Monte Carlo Rally.

They beat 19 other cars in the 2500 mile race from London to Monte Carlo and back, travelling through Dijon, Grenoble and the French Alps.

The pair work at the Newport branch of Keyline Builders Merchants and decided to take part in the Prostate Cancer Charity fundraiser that the company supports.

Mr Dobbs bought a 1975 Escort for £500 and spent three months rebuilding it to look like a World War Two Jeep with the help of friend Peter Edwards.

The vehicle won the best car and most effort awards in the race, which finished on Friday. Mr Dobbs said: "Building the car has been a labour of love and I've never done anything like it before."
