COVENTRY: Six men have been charged in connection with an alleged £1m fraud at Jewson.

The men have been charged with conspiring to defraud the merchant. The Coventry offices in Binley Road, Binley, where the alleged fraud is claimed to have taken place, is the company's UK headquarters.

Jewson's former sales and marketing director Anthony Newman is among those charged with the conspiracy. He and another Jewson worker, Kevin Seager, were arrested in April 2008 and have remained on police bail since.

The inquiry, which dates back to 2003, first came to light in April 2008 when irregularities were spotted in the company's accounts after a tip-off from a whistleblower. Bosses at the Binley Road site launched an internal investigation and reported the incident to police.
