SCARBOROUGH: Sponsorship from MKM Builders Merchants helped fund and run the Scarborough South Cliff Classic golf tournament.

The Classic is believed to be the only amateur four-day event to be played along the same lines as a professional tour event with a half-way cut made after two qualifying days and groups going out in ascending order over the last two days.

This year is one of the best events since the competition was started with some 120 golfers taking part, said the organisers.

The cut saw 40 golfers compete for the last two days of the competition and seven competitors with a possible chance of catching eight-handicapper Andy Roberts. His first scores of 66-nett followed by 70 made him the clear leader going into the final two days. Roberts followed this with a nett-68 on the third day putting him even further clear.

Chasing him was Paul Foster, a 19-handicap golfer, who had to play off 18 as the competition has a maximum handicap of 18, and Mark Ramsden, 16 handicap. These three golfers were to make up the final group on the fourth day.
