LONDON: The Health and Safety Executive will survive the great quango cull but will be reformed and its expenditure scrutinised "in light of the spending review and Lord Young's review of health and safety".

Also remaining is the CITB-ConstructionSkills, the industry's sector skills council, along with the Commission for the Built Environment and Partnerships for Schools, and some 40 other bodies whose future remains "under consideration" as part of the cull of quangos.

In all, 192 quangos will go, 118 will merge, and another 171 substantially reformed leaving 380 bodies in place.
