ESSEX: Lib Dem Colchester MP Bob Russell was given an insight into Get Britain Building's 'Plan B' when he visited Kent Blaxill last week.

Mr Russell heard the case for the coalition government to adopt 'Plan B' as the only way to create 2.5 million jobs in the country.

Plan B, which was drawn up before last week's public spending announcement, was explained to Mr Russell by Simon Blaxill, Kent Blaxill's managing director, and Brett Amphlett, the Builders' Merchants Federation's policy manager.

The plan highlights that the market potential of renovating and insulating existing homes could be worth up to £6.5bn a year, bolstering the building industry and allied trades and crafts. Research has shown that even £1 spent in the construction generates £2.84 in economic activity.

Mr Russell commented: "We need to get over the message of the importance of buying locally. Money spent with local firms stays in the local economy." He also expressed his concern at the lack of social housing building in Colchester, with 5000 people on the housing waiting list.

Mr Amphlett said: "The Government's big idea is to replace jobs lost from public services with new ones created by commerce. The stark reality is that public sector cuts are moving at a faster pace than private enterprise can create jobs. That is why we are saying that construction equals real, purposeful jobs and enduring economic growth at a local level, on a regional basis."

Simon Blaxill outlined how Kent Blaxill is evolving through the recession  by developing new business in such areas as designer glass, green products and specialist industrial paints.

Mr Russell commented: "Despite difficult economic conditions, Kent Blaxill displays a firm commitment to invest in local people and to grow its business."
