LEIGHTON BUZZARD: In a bid to give MP’s first-hand insight into the current state of the construction sector, stone masonry product manufacturer Forticrete, opened its doors to local MP Andrew Selous, who spent the day at its flagship factory.
Mr Selous, local MP for South West Bedfordshire, visited Forticrete’s factory last month to learn more about the construction industry and how it is faring during the economic downturn. He also discussed how the Government could best help promote the use of more environmentally friendly products, with particular focus on developing traditional local products, as opposed to new systems.
John Lambert, director and general manager of Forticrete, was on hand to provide in-depth briefings on the day. He said: ”As we all know, the recession has hit everyone hard, and the construction industry in particular. We have worked hard to remain positive through these challenging times.
“As we look to the future of the industry, we are feeling frustrated by the focus that is being placed on new product development and systems, when there is some fantastic innovation taking place with traditional products. There is the potential to make some very big carbon savings. However, these are being passed over in favour of products that don’t deliver what they promise.
“Government schemes such as the Code for Sustainable Homes and the Green Guide do not recognise the full carbon footprint of products in relation to their source. For example, companies will get extra credits for specifying solar panels, even though they may have come from China which would mean a massive carbon footprint in terms of distribution mileage.
“Visits such as this help to educate politicians on the true state of the industry and are vital to ensure both industry and public stakeholders work together to safeguard the sector during the recession.
"It’s great to see an MP lik Andrew showing such an enthusiastic interest in the industry and what we have to say.”
