LINCOLN: Simons Group construction is in the early stages of redundancy consultations. The firm currently employs 300 people in the UK.
Alex Blakelock, a spokesman for the company said: "We are in the early stages of a consultation process that will eventually determine the extent of any reductions and the timescale.
"We're still in a strong financial position, we are doing this in response to some project delays and the current economy. This is so we can continue to develop and deliver in the future."
The privately owned building firm's current customers include Asda, B&Q, Debenhams and Boots.
Michael Self, from the Lincolnshire Federation of Small Businesses, said: "It certainly is a shame when prominent Lincoln businesses find themselves in this situation.
"Unfortunately, it is inevitable the construction industry is facing difficulties in the current financial situation. The public sector has lost money and we have been in this economic situation for so long that the private sector has to look very carefully at things as well.
"I'm sure what organisations like Simons is trying to do at the moment is take the necessary action now to ensure it is still strong and able to perform when the upturn comes. It has got to take action now so it is strong enough to survive in the future."
