EAST SUSSEX: Independent merchant, Chandlers Building Supplies, has won the Fatstock award for Lewes Business of the Year 2010.

The Fatstock Awards and dinner are run by Lewes Round Table as a charity fundraiser. It is an old farming tradition, where every year at the end of the cattle market, awards would be given for best live stock.

These awards, while still given to farming, sit alongside Lewes’ Business of the Year and its Personality of the Year awards.

Nick Turck from the town's Round Table said Chandlers’ victory was due to its being "a strong business in the Lewes and surrounding area for a number of years. The merchant is very popular with the local population.

"In recent years, Chandlers has managed to successfully relocate its Lewes branch and open two new branches successfully during the recession," Mr Turck explained.

"The merchant has plans to open further new branches next year. It has excellent customer service and has opened a number of concessions for its customers including HSS Hire and Kew Electrical," Mr Turck went on.

"Chandlers continues to help the community with charity sponsorship, fundraising and support of local projects."

Richard Skinner, the merchant's commercial director, commented: “I’d like to thank everyone at the Round Table for this award. It is a great credit to our Lewes manager, Tim Parsons, and his excellent team, whose efforts it rewards.”
