BURY ST EDMUNDS: Ridgeons was fined £5000 and ordered to pay £4355 towards costs over health and safety failures at its Sudbury, Suffolk, branch that result in injury to a sub-contractor.

The accident occurred in September 2008 when a contractor was electrocuted and fell from a ladder at the start of maintenance work on a crane.

Ridgeons appeared at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates' Court on 16 December and pleaded guilty to breaching regulation 4(3) of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

The firm had no previous convictions and retrained all managers about the company's policy for controlling contractors following the accident. It has also revised its procedures to ensure that its employees work with contractors to jointly agree safe methods of work.
