COVENTRY: Jewson has taken delivery of 37 MAN trucks, the first batch of a 430-truck order from the German company.

Denis Wellfare, transport director for Jewson, said the deal is part of the company's fleet replacement programme. The mixed MAN fleet will include 18- and 26-tonne MAN TGM rigids, as well as several MAN TGS and MAN TGX tractor units.

All the rigids are fitted with Bevan bodies and many include front- or rear-mounted cranes. They also have the company's own vehicle and driver performance monitoring system and are covered by eight-year MAN repair and maintenance contracts provided by the MAN dealer network.

"Like any major operator, we are looking for enhanced performance and reduced operating cost. So, while this is a decent order, we are also treating it as a trial of the vehicles in operation, and the support we can get from the manufacturer and its network," he said.
