IRELAND: Acheson & Glover (A&G), a leading supplier of premium quality hard landscaping products, has achieved the Environmental International Standard ISO 14001.
Patrick Sherry, health, safety and environmental manager for A&G, says achievement of the Standard is great recognition of A&G’s commitment to environmental best practice at all levels, from the workers in the quarries to senior management. A&G was awarded the Standard in February 2011.
“Environmental awareness has always been high on our agenda,” explains Patrick. “We’re very conscious of the impact of the business on our surroundings and with eight sites, ranging in size from 16 acres to 130 acres, qualifying for ISO 14001 was a huge challenge. However, our existing energy management, waste and anti-pollution policies contributed greatly and our energy awareness days have been a regular practice at all A&G sites with every member of staff getting involved.
“Reducing our carbon impact is important financially as well as environmentally,” continues Mr Sherry, “as the Carbon Impact Tax will apply in 2012, so getting into the habit of turning off lights and appliances is a step in the right direction.”
