LONDON: Merchants shares rallied along with a general lift in prices yesterday on the London stock exchange.

By lunchtime Travis Perkins rose 4.3% to 973.5 pence, while Wolseley gained 4.7% to 2090 pence. Both stocks had declined for the previous five days.

The FTSE 100 Index climbed 1.4% to 5677.14 at 2pm yesterday, rebounding from the longest stretch of losses in more than two years. News of the G7 meeting today helped calm markets.
