NORTH-EAST: Staff from three North East branches of Jewson recently tee-d off on a 17 hour golf marathon, raising £600 for Barnardo's, the charity that supports over 100 000 children, young people and their families every year.

The team of four from the North Shields, Prudhoe and Newcastle Central branches took to the course at Stocksfield Golf Course at 4.20am to begin playing the 72 holes and didn’t finish until 9.30pm that evening. Throughout the course of the day they walked more than 16 miles – each carrying their own 25kg golf bags.

The highlight of the day was a spectacular hole in one from Mark O’Halleron, sales executive at the North Shields branch. Mr O’Halleron said: “We’re all keen golfers so at first it didn’t seem like that much of a challenge but after 17 hours on the course and many miles covered, it certainly takes it out of you. But we were very pleased to be able to raise so much money for such a worthy cause and I was particularly happy with my hole-in-one – and so were the rest of the team when they reminded me about the club tradition that meant I had to buy everyone in the clubhouse a drink!”

Barnardo's is Jewson’s charity of choice for 2011/12 as part of its ‘Together’ charity programme. Since its launch in 2002 the programme has raised almost £2 million for some great causes including Help the Hospices, the British Heart Foundation, Great Ormond Street and Cancer Research UK. The programme encourages Jewson staff, their families, customers and suppliers to organise and participate in a range of activities to support the nominated charity through fundraising and volunteering.
