UK: World Green Building Week is an annual event which this year focuses on the theme of ‘green buildings in the new green economy’.
This week will see Green Building Councils around the world hosting a range of events to highlight the critical role buildings play in improving the global carbon footprint and saving money, while also creating jobs, reducing fuel poverty and improving lives.
In the UK, members of the UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) are hosting more than 25 events around the country, from building tours to debates and from seminars to the launch of new tools for measurement and reporting.
UK-GBC will also be hosting a launch event today, 19 September, at the Building Centre featuring keynote speeches from David Kennedy, chief executive of the Committee on Climate Change and Andrew Gould, chief executive of Jones Lang LaSalle.
According to the chairman of the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC), Tony Arnel, the case for green building has never been stronger: “As the world’s nations transition from ‘business as usual’ to new ‘green’ economies, low carbon, sustainable buildings and communities can save money, support job growth and improve the health, wellbeing and general living conditions of millions of people.”
Paul King, chief executive of UK-GBC commented: “The built environment is set to play a crucial role in the transition to a low carbon economy, offering almost twice the cost-effective carbon mitigation potential of any other sector. We are delighted to see so many of our members getting involved in World Green Building Week this year – demonstrating that businesses are increasingly seeing sustainability as core to their organisations’ success.”
