LONDON: Trends in paint colours are changing with bland colours such as magnolia giving way to brighter shades, according to a survey by B&Q.

It reports sales of plain shades outstripped two-to-one by a new favourite - red. B&Q attributes the change to people choosing to spruce up their homes as an alternative to selling.

Magnolia, long-time favourite of new homeowners and those opting for a "safe" colour with a view to selling, has gone out of fashion, as the housing market remains sluggish, B&Q said.

At the same time, the DIY chain said sales of more exciting – but riskier – shades of red have rocketed. B&Q also attributes increased garden product sales to the sluggish housing market. But overall, sales through DIY shops are down in the UK.
