NORTHAMPTON: Travis Perkins is among the first vehicle operators to be awarded the Gold Standard of Transport for London’s Freight Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS), which aims to improve freight delivery in the capital.

The company has been recognised for its high levels of safety, efficiency and environmental responsibility, including initiatives that have reduced CO2 emissions by more than 2.4 million kilograms and vehicle incidents by more than 85 percent.

To achieve the Gold Standard, Travis Perkins Group has had to meet industry-leading performance criteria by demonstrating a track record in improving its sustainability. This includes operational targets based on reducing CO2 emissions and vehicle incidents, improving efficiency and maintaining high levels of health and safety.

In particular, the Group initiated an anti-idling campaign in 2009 using vehicle tracking that has achieved a three-year saving of 2.4 million kilograms of CO2, equating to more than a three per cent reduction in fuel usage. Meanwhile, over the past ten years vehicle incidents have reduced dramatically from an average of 4.5 per vehicle per year to just 0.6, achieving a 10 per cent year on year cost saving during this period.

Glen Davies freight development manager for FORS commented: “Our aim is to raise standards by educating and encouraging fleet businesses to follow best practice, rather than focusing purely on keeping within the law. Travis Perkins Group has demonstrated its commitment to becoming safer, greener and more efficient, so this achievement is not only well deserved but also a leading example to other organisations operating within London.”

Ronald Searle, Group transport risk and compliance manager at Travis Perkins said: “Gaining the Gold Standard is recognition for all the effort across the business to raise operational standards and adopt best practice procedures in terms of health and safety, environmental responsibility and overall fleet performance. It is our intention to build on this achievement to ensure we continue our hard work moving forward and to continue to raise the bar that little bit higher.”
