UK: The Builders Merchants Federation has secured David Smith, the economics editor of the Sunday Times, as the Keynote Speaker at BMF Members’ Day on 9th October.

The straight talking and respected economist will assess prospects in an age of instability and how the UK and European economies will affect business in the coming year. Will it be a slow motion train crash, or are there reasons to be cheerful?

BMF Members’ Day is renowned for addressing business-critical issues and delegates will have a further opportunity to discuss the Economy and the Building Sector and how merchants and suppliers have weathered the storm at one of three break-out sessions during the day.

Other important issues to be discussed include the impact of the latest changes to Construction Products Regulation, CE Marking and European Timber Regulation, with expert input from John Tebbit, Industry Affairs Director at the Construction Products Association and John White, chief executive at the Timber Trades Federation. Delegates can also discover how to become Green Deal Providers and benefit from the Government’s carbon saving Green Deal initiative following its launch in October.

It will be the first BMF event attended by John Newcomb, the organisation’s recently appointed managing director, who said: “I’m looking forward to meeting as many members as possible at the event and to outlining my first impressions of the industry and the challenges and opportunities ahead. In addition to the excellent guest speakers, we will be announcing initial details of the BMF All Industry Conference for 2013, and the launch of our latest initiative to raise the bar in merchant management training, the new BMF Foundation Degree.”
