UK: WT Burden, a supplier of civil engineering and building materials to the construction industry – has won the philanthropy category of the 'Social Responsibility – Community' section in the prestigious 2012 Peer Awards for Excellence.
Sponsored by The Independent newspaper, the Peer Awards for Excellence celebrate accomplishments of real people making an impact at work and across the community, honouring businesses that consistently demonstrate high standards of corporate governance, social responsibility and employee engagement.
In the case of Burdens, the award reflects the group’s ongoing determination to challenge the role of business within society with its model that combines employee co-ownership with a pro-active charitable foundation. In its submission, the Group demonstrated and emphasised its policy of delivering profit and sharing its success through co-ownership.
This co-ownership model involves share ownership for everyone employed within the business, with Burdens Charitable Foundation also owning shares. In effect, both employees and society, through the grant-making activities of the foundation, benefit from the ongoing success of the business.
Commenting on the award, corporate development director Kevin Hancock said: “Over the years, BCF has contributed many millions of pounds to charitable causes at home and abroad, an amazing achievement and something that we’re all very proud of. We are therefore delighted to receive one of this year’s Peer Awards in recognition of our efforts.”
