LEAMINGTON SPA: Wolseley UK has launched an induction workbook for branch staff. It covers a three month induction programme that provides development opportunities within Wolseley UK.

New staff from assistant manager level and below are allocated a "buddy" to support them and take them through the induction workbook. Buddies receive separate guidance on how to mentor the new employee. The new joiner’s line manager responsible for the induction is also sent an Induction Workbook Manager’s Guide, to ensure probationary reviews are held regularly and the programme progresses appropriately.

Short learning sessions, which can be undertaken at a pace to suit each individual’s needs, give plenty of opportunities to ask questions, check understanding of key points and demonstrate knowledge. The sessions enable buddies to focus on areas where employees would most benefit from training and challenges for the employee to complete are agreed at key milestones.

A final three month review completes the induction period, when the employee receives a Career Workbook to help them continue with their professional development.

Karen Finn, HR director Wolseley UK said: “A thorough induction process will ensure employees are welcomed into our business, give a clear understanding of what we expect and what they can expect in return, and help make our employees to be more efficient much more quickly.

“We’re confident we have the best branch staff in the business, but we want to go even further, and continue to invest in our workforce and develop our people, so that they can offer exceptional customer service.”
