NORTHAMPTON: The decline in the housebuilding market has not impacted on Travis Perkins. The national merchant has used the recession to purchase rivals and to increase its market share to become the country's largest supplier of building materials with 2000 branches and 16 brands.

Chief executive Geoff Cooper is ambitious to expand even further. Over the next few years, he is hoping to take the group to 3000 branches and increase the company's online business.

Although most building materials are sold from sites,Travis Perkins has been upgrading its internet offering to keep pace with customer demand.

This spring, the national will add to its tightly-knit management team with the appointment of Tony Buffin as its new finance director.

Mr Buffin's experience as FD of Australian supermarket chain, Coles will, it is said, stand him in good stead for his new role at the burgeoning merchant.
