The Birmingham Brummies speedway team are joining forces with title sponsors Selco Builders Warehouse for a major charity push.

The Brummies, currently lying second in the Elite League, will compete against the Lakeside Hammers at their Perry Barr home on Wednesday 10 July, and the match will be this season's charity fixture.

Money raised will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support, official charity of Selco.

The Brummies' riders will be aiding the fundraising efforts by taking buckets to collect donations around the crowd during an interval between heats.

"As team title sponsors to the Birmingham Brummies, we are delighted to be able to stage an official charity match," said Selco’s head of marketing Helen Cooper. "We are looking forward to an excellent turnout, especially with the Brummies in fine form this season, and hopefully supporters will dig deep into their pockets to back the charity push.

"Macmillan is a fantastic charity. We are delighted to play a small part in helping to raise awareness of the great work it carries out and the help it offers to families affected by cancer."

As well as bucket collections, supporters will have the chance to donate to Macmillan by texting Brummies to 70550 to donate £5.

A concerted effort has been made to secure a bumper attendance at the charity fixture with a discounted admission rate of £10 being widely available. In addition, 500 West Midlands police officers, together with their families, have also been invited as guests of the Brummies.

"We are delighted to be supporting the charity fixture and we hope it will be a successful night on the track for the Brummies and a successful one off it for Selco's official charity, Macmillan Cancer Support," said Brummies co-owner Alan Phillips.
