LONDON: ITM Builders' Merchant denies local residents' claims that the company's timber stock poses a fire hazard. A fire above a woodworking warehouse sparked fears that residents are at risk living so close to flammable materials.

The fire damaged the first-floor flat in Myddleton Road, Bounds Green, when it erupted at 9.40am on Saturday.

Residents are urging fire inspectors to assess the ITM Builders' Merchant, claiming that having a timber store in such a densely populated street creates a danger to residents if another fire were to happen.

Builder's merchant manager Andrew Alexandrou said: "I don't believe we do pose a danger. We only store timber and glass in our shops so we don't think there would be enough there to create a fire hazard."

Bounds Green ward councillor John Oakes said: "A lot of residents are frightened similar fires will break out in the future and the timber yard would make it more difficult to stop the fire spreading."
