BIRMINGHAM: A burst water main helped swell a builders' merchants’ cash donation to a major children’s charity.
Birmingham-based Selco Builders Warehouse has been awarded ‘Champion’ status by the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) after raising £40 000 in the last 12 months, much of which was brought in as a direct result of a plumbing disaster at a London theatre.
Last year Selco managers and suppliers attended a performance of the hit Queen-based West End show We Will Rock You, when they had to be evacuated after a burst water main halted the show.
The price of tickets was refunded but, instead of organising another trip, the management team of Selco decided to donate the returned cash to the NSPCC, the company’s chosen charity.
Appropriately, because of the Queen song 'We Are The Champions', Selco’s support was recognised by being awarded with ‘Champion' status in the NSPCC Family, a special community of the charity’s closest supporters who have done their bit to help protect vulnerable children.
The donation was just one of a number of initiatives to raise funds over the last 12 months. The sum was added to over the year, including the latest supplier conference.
Chris Cunliffe, operations director at Selco, said: “Selco supports the NSPCC because their efforts are incredibly important as kids don’t have a choice in the way they are cared for. It’s up to adults to help them – that’s why we are a long-term supporter.
“We have had a lot of fun raising this money and really appreciate the efforts of staff, suppliers and customers in helping us towards this sum.”
